As a Clinical Psychologist at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee, Nicole Steil, PsyD, LP, is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others and giving back to her community.

Since starting her career with Ascension Wisconsin five years ago, Nicole has given back to her patients and community in another meaningful way, by participating in our associate giving campaign, Mission Possible.

Nicole’s inspiration for giving back through Mission Possible stems from a variety of places. From wanting to support her patients in a meaningful way outside of appointments, to being inspired by her own maternal health journey and the care she received at Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee, her decision to give back each year is rooted in her desire to support her community:

“What motivates me to continue to give back is the chance to directly help people in my community who may need extra support. I work in Milwaukee, but it’s also my home. Being able to help people who live here is meaningful to me. I think there is something really special about contributing to something that actually impacts the people we are neighbors too.”

Shortly after beginning her career with Ascension Wisconsin, Nicole learned she was pregnant with her second child. Because of where she was in her own maternal health journey, Nicole felt inspired to give back to women and family health at Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee, and has continued to support this area of care ever since:

“When I started with Ascension, I found out within two months of my start date that I was pregnant. I did all my OBG-YN appointments through Ascension and my daughter was born at Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee. And so, I felt most connected to the women and families fund because of where I was in my own journey.”

Nicole’s experience of receiving care at Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee throughout her pregnancy was a positive one, and has played a key role in her desire to continue supporting women and family health, and ensuring fellow mothers receive the same compassionate care she did:

“I felt like my care team was really attentive and went above and beyond to make sure me and the baby were healthy. My OB-GYN, Dr. Czarina A. Helf was on top of everything and super accessible and easy to get a hold of. I really valued my nursing team too. The nurses helped watch my daughter through the night so I can rest and recover. The care I received was really attentive and was not only centered on treating my baby, but also on me being a woman who had just given birth.”

When asked why fellow associates should consider participating in Mission Possible, Nicole reflected on the notion of how one small act can have a profound impact.

“We have this idea that if we were to go back in time and do one small thing differently, it can have a major impact and drastically change the course of history. But rarely do we live every day as if something small could have a big impact. The reality is, that it can. Mission possible is an opportunity to do something small, or large that can absolutely have a profound impact on our community. If everyone had the mentality that something small could have a profound impact, then we could change the world.”
