Guardian Angel Nominations

The following testimonials were written in each patient's own words.

Dr. Matthew Lochen and registered nurse Bernie Loether, Ascension Mercy

"Dr. Lochen and RN Bernie are such assets to the ER. They were very caring and understanding and made me feel like I was important, even though they were busy. If not for Dr. Lochen, I would be getting antibiotics I didn't need."

Dr. William Bake, Ascension Medical Group at Ascension All Saints

"Dr. Bake is one of the most caring doctors I've ever met in my life. I had uncontrolled migraines for a couple of years, and he was able to get them under control. I have an ongoing seizure problem, which he is always on top of, and they are manageable. I love that Dr. Bake will personally call you about test results and any questions that come up. He will also take the time to personally respond to some messages through MyChart.

Disorders of the brain can be a very hard and heavy weight to carry, but knowing that he's on our side makes the whole situation easier. After appointments, he walks you up to the front to let the nurse know what's next. He is an incredible doctor, a lifesaver and an overall great person."

Sam Egerer, nurse navigator and registered nurse, Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Ozaukee Cancer Center

Nominated by two patients

“Samantha has been there for me since my cancer diagnosis in 2022. First as a nurse and later as navigator. Samantha always shows care and compassion to me and helps in any way she can. Most recently helping me get into a YMCA program to help me gain weight and strength. I am so thankful for Samantha. She is a true Guardian Angel!"

"Samantha had walked me through a tough time. She has always patiently listened to me and gave me feedback when appropriate. As my cancer care navigator she is always there for me and tells me what I need to hear, not always what I want to hear. To say she goes the extra mile would be an understatement. She checked on me during chemo and checks on me when I am in for my infusion. She does all this with a smile and genuine concern for me as a person. I could not be better off in a bad situation because of her."

Sara Stevenson, advanced nurse practitioner, Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Ozaukee

"Sara Stevenson is one of the friendliest providers I've ever had the fortune to be associated with. Always upbeat, very knowledgeable, truly cares, works to find the best solution and alternatives. I am continually impressed with her care of my wounds and look forward to the visits."

Dr. Chelsea Holtz, Ascension Medical Group

"Dr. Holtz has been my family physician for four years. This past fall I was diagnosed with cancer. Dr. Holtz made sure to schedule me for the tests I needed to find the cancer and she made herself available to give me the diagnosis and help me chart the path forward in terms of my care. She was accessible and kind. Dr. Holtz is everything a primary care doctor should be."

Dr. John Schwab and Medical Assistant Viollca Paja, Ascension Medical Group

"Dr. Schwab always comes in with a smile on his face and takes the time to listen to us and answer questions. He gives us good advice, especially when we are having a problem. Thank you, Dr. Schwab, for all you do for us...you know we appreciate all the hard work you do!"

"Viollca is a GEM!! Whenever I send a message on MyChart, she answers very quickly. She is the BEST Medical Assistant we have ever had. She is so pleasant and truly works very, very hard. We don't know what we would do without her. Keep up the great work, Viollca. We can't say thank you enough for all you do for Dr. Schwab's patients!"

Dr. Lisa Speidel, Ascension Medical Group

"Dr. Lisa Speidel is my Guardian Angel because she saved my life, and she cared. I was very sick, vomiting every day, and doctors told me I was crazy, that it was all in my head, and I needed mental health medication. Dr. Speidel listened to me and sent me to do a specific test. They found I had gastroparesis. Now my quality of life is much better, and I can live my life!!!"
